DTT, digitalisation and audiovisualisation facilitate the introduction of High Definition

Apr 24, 2008 - BM news

The mass introduction of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), and the digitalisation and audiovisualisation of society represent facilitating factors for the introduction of high-definition (HD), according to the report The high-definition market in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area of influence, drafted by David Xirau of Mediapro.

The study, which is No. 7 from the "Prospectiva" collection of the Barcelona Strategic Metropolitan Plan, analyses the current state of HD in Catalonia and its impact on the value chain, as well as the present and future landmarks that it represents in the audiovisual and innovation business fabric.

David Xirau, Director of New Projects for Mediapro (which is a member of Barcelona Media's Board of Trustees), stressed that the transition toward HD will mobilise the audiovisual sector as a whole, given that “imposing a complete technical change of the entire television or exhibition network brings with it a number of strategic and financial opportunities which derive from participation in an international context that is filled with competitive challenges for national actors”.

Economic models

The report also defines the economic models during the process, as although in some cases there will be a need to "invest rapidly and massively in the foundations of the productive structure”, in others “the decisions can be postponed”. Likewise, “HD does not offer the same income potential for all sectors”, the report adds.

The study also examines the key elements for the introduction of HDTV into Spain and Catalonia, and finally, the author presents the objectives and lines of action for the proposed action plan for the Barcelona Metropolitan area.

The high-definition market in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area of influence was presented at the April 22@Update Breakfast, held on the 24th of the month at the headquarters of 22@Barcelona.
