History
Barcelona Media is heir to the Estació de la Comunicació, a project of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra that became a local point of reference after its creation in 2001. It established a presence in R&D+I on a Europe-wide level in the media industry.
This success demonstrated that the transfer of knowledge from academia to business can be efficient when it is focussed on a specific industry. The relevance of the media industry to the economic development of Catalonia led to the transformation of the Estació de la Comunicació into a technology centre in 2005: Barcelona Media – Innovation Centre.
This change was accompanied by new thinking as regards to the definitive location of the centre. Although the Age of Communication was looking to be integrated with the emblematic railway station Estació de França, Barcelona Media – Innovation Centre would have its own building within the Parc Barcelona Media in the 22@Barcelona Innovation district.
Since its founding as a technology centre, Barcelona Media has been consolidating itself and widening its structure to be able to develop the transfer of knowledge and technology resulting from research of the highest level to the needs of the media industry.
